Redmar Plaza, Radcliff, KY

Today’s entry takes us to a location that is not only abandoned, but also no more.  The Google maps screenshot of the buildings below (Aug 2013) is all that remains of the structures that used to sit in Redmar Plaza along North Wilson Drive just outside Fort Knox’s Wilson Gate.

Abandoned N Wilson

The building on the right appears to have once been M’s Used Cars based on a faded sign that still sits in the parking lot.  The other building, complete with a drive-thru, appears to have been either a restaurant or a café (assumed for the purposes of this article to have been a café based on local sources).

Fast forward to present-day, where these buildings are now lots littered with shattered glass, charred brick and wood, and scorched metal.

The photo above is taken from the back of the building that appears to have been a restaurant.  The drive-thru barriers are still intact in the far left of the photo.  The shallow foundation is now full of rubble and burned-out concrete.

There was surprisingly little information available on these buildings.  A google search shows that the Redmar Plaza is for sale.

A final google search shows that these buildings were disposed of via controlled burn back in December of 2013 by the Radcliff FD.

  1. I lived in Radcliff in the early and mid 1970s. At that time, the building on the right was Long John Silver’s, and the building on the left was Malito’s Italian Restaurant. At that time, the now-abandoned Redmar Plaza was fully occupied, with tenants including a bakery, drug store, discount store (originally Grant’s, then Murphy’s Mart), a slightly more upscale department store (People’s, I believe), a beauty salon, shoe store, barber shop, and an ice cream parlor, among other businesses. Sad to see how the area has declined in the decades since…

    • Thanks for your comment and for your input on what used to be in this square! It sure has the looks of a place that once saw a lot of business just based on its size. I know the area around Fort Knox used to be a much busier place. From what I understood from locals, the decline was largely due to the relocation of several Army brigades, particularly the armor school and the associated units.
